Food

King’s College has a contract with a chef who provides wonderful, mouth-watering menus. The chef is none other than Chef Michel Lamontagne of Choices Catering. Not only are food and menus wonderful, King's College is green! No, not the color...green as in environmentally friendly. Chef Michel will not be serving our meals on disposable paper or plastic. With all the different food intolerances showing up in our society, Chef Michel has gone the extra kilometer!

"Michel, our head chef, has two years of nutrition training and that qualifies him to help guests with special dietary needs, plan their meals. Vegetarians, people with celiac disease, diabetes or other conditions and people with food sensitivities can plan their menus with Michel."  (Information taken from: "Overview"  www.kingsu.org/ (click on Conference Services, Catering Menu).

To read more information on Chef Michel, and how King's College has gone green, check out this website: www.kingsu.org/alumni-friends/pdf/Kings_Connection(May2009)  There is also an article in the Edmonton Journal, February 2009 on Chef Michel.

Venue

King’s College has had some major renovations and additions since the Edmonton Weavers last hosted a HWSDA Conference. As well as the tower accommodations, there is now an apartment complex. There is also RV parking available without plug-ins or hook-ups.

Vendors

The location for the Vendors will be in the huge gym, which is located right across from the cafeteria where many of the meals will be served. Along side the vendors will be the location for the FIBRE OLYMPIC CHALLENGES on Friday afternoon. We are receiving a wonderful response from our potential vendors and will publish a list of vendors after the vendor deadline of March 31, 2010.

 Fibre Fair

The Fibre Fair has been eliminated this year so that you can concentrate your efforts as a guild or group of fellow fibre enthusiasts towards the Fibre Olympic Challenge.

Fashion Show

We felt the Fashion Show should be front and centre this year. The FASHION SHOW is taking on the runway Saturday evening after the banquet. As mentioned before, if you are runway shy, models will be available. The Fashion Show will feature wearable apparel created from your weaving, spinning, dyeing, or felting: tops, hats, dresses, vests, scarves, sandals, socks, shawls, capes, robes, mittens, gloves, trousers, jewellry, etc. Enter as many items as you would like to share with us. It is not too late to start working on your wearable apparel. The conference colours are bronze, silver, gold, white and black.

Exchanges - Fibre Art Postcards Exchange

Fibre postcards are easy to make and wonderful to share. Make one or make lots! Use up your scraps of handwovens, felts or silk fusion. We will display them all and then swap them at the end of the conference! Your Fibrecard should be approx. 4`x 6`and is usually made as follows: 1) a front that is made from fabric/ mixed media - with or without embellishments. It could be one piece of handwoven fabric, pieces of handwovens joined together, silk fusion or thin felt, etc. Embellish as desired 2) a middle that is made from batting or fusible web (easiest is a 2 sided fusible web, for example, Fast2Fuse) 3) a back that is light coloured cotton or muslin. Complete instructions will be in your conference package or see the website below:

Conference Colours and Logo

Keeping with our theme of the 2010 Olympics, the colours are: bronze, silver, gold, white and black. Yes, “The” Olympic rings are five in number, but we cannot copy that logo…Jean Connor, our lovely logo creator, has designed three balls of fibre, bronze, silver and gold, coming from a spindle onto a bobbin.

 Registration

Exciting news just fresh from the HWSDA Executive meeting.  It has been decided to open the registration to non-members of HWSDA.  Non-members of HWSDA are now able to register for the pre-conference only, but only after the early registration deadline.  Okay all you HWSDA members, it is time to start promoting the wonderful pre-conference opportunities to your non-member fibre friends. Registration forms will be included in the Registration Package.

Registration packages will be mailed out at the end of January 2010. Registration opens February 1, 2010. Early bird for HWSDA members: February 1 to March 1, 2010. Registration for non-HWSDA members for both pre-conference and conference: March 2-31, 2010. Late registrations will be accepted until ??? (date has not been determined).

You may be wondering why the registration deadline is March 31 when we are not having our conference until June - a very good question. The answer is because King’s College requires final numbers by April 15th. Our lovely Registrar, Marge Gray, will only have 2 weeks to finalize classes.   If any classes need to be cancelled the classrooms will need to be cancelled by April 15th. We can still accept registrations after March 31st, but only filling in the classes that are open. Now none of us will really need to concern ourselves with the cancelled classes and deadlines after March 31st because of course all of us will be registering before that, RIGHT?
